Cleaning
When your wrought iron gate becomes dirty, the best way to clean it is to use a soft cloth and a mild soap and water mixture. After that, rinse it thoroughly with clean water. Avoid using abrasive products on the gate, as they can remove the protective outer finish.
How To Remove Rust
Scrub the area with steel wool to remove any remaining corrosion, then apply a solution of vinegar and water to the area to eliminate any remaining corrosion and prevent new corrosion from forming.
Finishing
You’ll need to refinish or wax it with a rust-resistant finish. The product should be reapplied on a regular basis for optimal results. You may also choose to paint your iron gate; in this case, use an outdoor primer prior to painting to extend the life of the paint. Look for paints designed specifically for metal surfaces; these products can be applied evenly using a brush or a spray nozzle.
Another Method of Cleaning
In a bucket, combine a mild detergent and warm water. Using a sponge or a power washer, clean the piece with the mixture. Use a small nylon scrubbing brush to clean every crevice on intricate pieces. Thoroughly rinse the surface and pat dry with a clean towel.
Painting
To make application easier, choose a spray primer with rust-proof properties. At a minimum, apply two coats for maximum protection. After preparing the gate, paint it. Enamel paint is the most appropriate for iron. Apply at least two coats of spray paint, just as you did with the primer. Once dry, your wrought iron gate will look as good as new.
